Company & Mission:

Located in Durango, CO, (Headquarters) and Mount Pleasant, PA (Additive Manufacturing Center) Agile Space Industries, Inc. (AGILE) designs, builds, and tests in-space propulsion systems for satellites and spacecraft. AGILE uses state of the art 3D metal alloy printing techniques to rapidly design, manufacture, and test new engine designs in our purpose-built propulsion test facility. With over a decade of experience testing rocket engines, and engineers who have worked at industry leaders like Blue Origin, SpaceX, NASA, and Rocketdyne, AGILE is a rapidly growing company with many exciting Defense, Civil and Commercial programs.

Overview:

The Senior Principal Analysis Engineer is a key member of the AGILE team that will need to solve highly complex technical aerospace and mechanical engineering problems. This engineer will have ownership for predicting the performance and reliability of AGILE’s products by applying computational analysis and mathematical modeling.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform mechanical, thermal, fluid, and structural analysis of AGILE’s hypergolic rocket engines, devices, and systems for use in aerospace applications.
  • Perform detailed design optimization using advanced knowledge and experience in fluid and solid mechanics, aerodynamics, and rocket propulsion.
  • Conduct static, dynamic, and transient analysis of space components and systems to predict performance and margin using computational methods including Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Finite Element Analysis (FEA), computational thermal analysis, and multi-physics modeling.
  • Altitude systems are how AGILE simulates the space environment during test. This engineer must apply experience in low pressure (vacuum) and low temperature gas dynamics to analyze and predict performance of the system.
  • Conduct analyses to understand the flow fields in a center body second throat supersonic exhaust diffuser. Predict shock wave behavior and simulate ignition, steady state, and shut down transient characteristics in the test cell. Predict turbulent flow behavior and provide feedback into high altitude system design.
  • Create numerical algorithms to predict performance for a suite of potential future supersonic exhaust diffuser designs to inform technical inputs into new proposals.
  • Model combustion in propulsion systems by coupling reaction kinetics, turbulent flow, thermodynamics, and conjugate heat transfer for performance optimization.
  • Evaluate and find root cause for rocket engine intermittent combustion stability performance issues. Model acoustic behaviors.
  • Provide input to injector design by modeling droplet vaporization, spray patterns, chemical mixing, and combustion of hypergolic propellants.
  • Model hypergolic ignition to demonstrate preignition, thermal ignition, and transient combustion in rocket engines to optimize design.
  • Utilize Agile standard tools such as Solidworks, ANSYS (Thermal, Fluid, Structures), Python, MATLAB, NASA CEA, and Git for multiphysics modeling and computational engineering.
  • Provide technical mentorship, guidance, and training to junior engineers based on expertise in fluid and thermal modeling and analysis.
  • Couple the interaction between mechanical, fluid, and electrical components to develop system engineering models which predict the performance and reliability of AGILE’s propulsion systems for overall design improvement.
  • Analyze and interpret water flow and hot fire experimental data to propose design or process changes.
  • Complete system trade studies by applying knowledge of mechanical, fluid, aerospace, and thermal engineering.
  • Write formal presentations and papers for customer communications and milestone reviews. A typical output is to correlate modeling outcomes with test data and describe technical issues or phenomena.
  • Design effective experiments to optimize design functionality. Experiments will need to be multi-disciplinary in nature.
  • Publish and present AGILE’s research work in aerospace mechanical engineering journals and conferences.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a highly related concentration. MS +5 years of experience or BS +10 years of experience may be substituted.
  • Knowledge of fluid dynamics, heat transfer, rocket propulsion, thermodynamics, and combustion.
  • Experience in computational modeling techniques such as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and Computer Aided Design (CAD).
  • Strong background and knowledge in using ANSYS, SolidWorks, Python, and MATLAB
  • Knowledge of low pressure, low temperature, and microscale systems.
